Jewelry Care:
Keep your
precious jewelry looking beautiful for a lifetime with simple maintenance. Make
sure you understand how jewelry should be worn, stored and properly
cleaned.
Karat Gold Jewelry
Do not use
hard brush on gold metals which can be scratched the gold surface relatively
easily. Warm water and mild soap and a very soft brush will take care of most
of your cleaning needs. Use a gentle soft chamois cloth to polish your gold
jewelry after wearing. Remove all gold jewelry before showering or cleaning.
Soap can cause a film to form on karat gold jewelry, making it appear dull and
dingy. Take your gold chains and bracelets off at night, and store them flat to
prevent from breaking.
Sterling Silver Jewelry
Sterling
silver can oxidize with time. Do not expose it o air and light during storage
because this can cause silver to tarnish. Remove your jewelry when working with
household chemicals. Clean your silver jewelry with a mild soap and water, and
then allow to dry completely with a soft cloth. For more stubborn dirt, use
jewelry cleaner for silver use only. Store your silver jewelry in a cool, dry
place, preferably in a tarnish-preventive bag.
Coral and Pearl Jewelry
Since
pearls and coral are organic gems, they are both soft and porous. They also are
easily dulled or even eaten away by chemicals (e.g. chlorine, lotion, perfume,
hairspray, shaving cream, alcohol and other beauty products). For regular
cleaning, carefully wipe jewelry with a soft chamois cloth or damp cloth only
after each wearing to remove skin oil, perspiration, or any other residue
salts. This is especially important for pearls and coral. This is also to keep
your pieces lustrous and shining. If you wear your pearl/coral necklace often,
restring it every couple of years. Try not to let your jewelry pieces touch to
avoid scratching. Cultured pearls and coral jewelry are best stored in a
special chamois pouch individually.
Colored Gemstones
Use an
ultrasonic cleaner for diamonds, rubies and sapphires will be fine. Never use an
ultrasonic cleaner or ammonia for cleaning such gemstones like lapis,
turquoise, jade, malachite or onyx. Opals also require special care. Soak opals
briefly in cool water. Dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Never use an
ultrasonic cleaner or ammonia, and avoid heat and strong light which can dry
out the water in opals. They should be wiped clean gently with a damp cloth. Do
not expose gemstone pieces to salt water or chemicals such as all cosmetics,
perfumes and colognes. These gemstones can be porous and may absorb those
chemicals, even soap which may build up inside the stone and discolor it.
Gemstone such as Emeralds, are brittle and should not be worn when doing
household works or any other activity where the stone could be hit or damaged.
Gemstones can scratch the finish on your gold, silver or platinum jewelry if
you store them together in a drawer or jewelry box. Make sure store each piece
of gemstone jewelry separately so that harder stones don't scratch softer ones.
